Origin of Whole Body Vibration (WBV)

The origins of Whole Body Vibration (WBV) technology was originally developed by the Russian Space Program over 40 years ago.  They used it to rehabilitate their cosmonauts who lost bone density and muscle strength from being in zero gravity conditions in space.  Over the years the technology was developed and today it's beiong used by athletes looking to gain a competitive edge, and by women as a way to treat ospteoporosis that doesn't involve expensive perscription drugs and their side affects.

How and Why it works

A WBV platform produces a vibration through which energy is transferred from the platform to the body, resulting in rapid acceleration and deceleration of the body.  This loads and stimulates every cell in the body, producing physiologic effects just like exercise, only much faster, since the body now experiences loading and unloading up to 1500x per minute! Exercise causes the body to tire. When repeating this process of fatiguing over a time period of 4-6 weeks, the body adjusts to the level of effort, resulting in an increase in physical performance.

When standing on the platform you will notice how your body automatically adjusts to the vibrations.  By positioning the body in various postures on the vibrationg platform different muscles are targeted.  This loading, combined with the rapid mechanical stimulus of the platform produces a stretch reflex which, depending on the selected frequency, results in muscles contracting 20 to 50 times per second!  Because the body is constantly reacting to the vibrating platform, greater results are achieved and hormonal production is increased in much less time when compared to traditional training methods.  Each set should be no longer than 60 seconds in length, and training sessions need to be performed no more than 3 to 4 times per week with each session lasting about 10 minutes.
